About Dr Twynholm

profile-cv-pic

Dr Julia Twynholm is a Clinical Psychologist covering the Midlands area. She is registered with the British Psychological Society (BPS) and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), which ensures that she meets their standards for training, professional skills, and practice in line with the public’s interest.

Dr Julia Twynholm worked in the NHS for over ten years in a child psychology team providing psychological assessment and treatment to children and families with a variety of difficulties. She also provided supervision and consultation to other psychologists and staff.

From my experience I know that each child’s and family’s difficulties are different and so it is important to get a good formulation (understanding of your difficulties) in order to choose the best approach to help you. Effective therapy is about us working together to understand what your goals are and what we do together to achieve them. I make use of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), play and story based approaches, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and a neuropsychological understanding of child development (understanding the biology of the brain and how different areas develop over time). I also use mindfulness with children and adults.

Establishing Avon Psychology Service

Dr Julia Twynholm took the decision to establish Avon Psychology Service following both professional and personal experiences of the barriers in accessing psychological therapy.

As a mum of three young children and a Clinical Psychologist in the NHS for the last ten years I was well aware of the challenges of balancing my children’s needs with those of career, finances, home-life, and relationships. This, in combination with seeing and working with families experiencing various difficulties, and the constraints often placed on intervention by services, made me want to do something different.

I wanted to get to people sooner, before difficulties progressed, to be able to work more creatively and to use a variety of resources and approaches that enabled families to create change. So I took the decision to make a change and established Avon Psychology Service. I named it Avon to reflect the Warwickshire and Midland area I work with, which the River Avon flows through, and to reflect that I was starting on a journey and looking where the river may take me.
